History

The Vidya Bhavan College of Commerce was started by Rt. Rev. Bishop Valerian D’Souza, with the collaboration of Founder Principal, Fr. Alfred Barretto in 1983 with a view to offering quality education to students.

Vidya Bhavan College of Commerce is a Christian Minority College managed by the Poona Diocesan Educational Society whose Chairman is Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Dabre, Bishop of Pune.  The Poona Diocesan Educational Society is committed to the spread of education, particularly at the basic primary and secondary levels.  It has established 9 High Schools and just one college, the Vidya Bhavan College of Commerce, in keeping with its vision to provide value-based quality education.  The College was started in 1983 and is affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University. The College was primarily set up to give an opportunity to socially disadvantaged students to acquire a degree that would open up their possibilities for securing gainful employment and thus progress in life.

Vidya Bhavan College of Commerce grew as a natural process from the Vidya Bhavan School and Junior College. When it started in July 1983 it was housed on the fourth floor at Model Colony, Pune, but was later transferred to the present premises at Bhairobanalla from the year 1993. Notwithstanding the paucity of funds, the college grew step by step under the able guidance of Dr. C. P. Rodrigues, the Principal for the next twenty-five years.

The Library expanded from a single shelf to what it is today, a modest yet adequately spacious area for students who wish to have a quiet place for study and refer to books and journals.  Space was also allocated to the gymkhana which was fitted with equipment and sports facilities little by little.  Eventually, the Commerce Lab and Computer Lab were also set up and equipped with the necessary facilities. In 2004 the college undertook the Accreditation Process under the National Accreditation and Assessment Council of India and secured a B+ grade.

Though the college continues to be small in size and number of students, it has experienced rapid growth since its inception, indicating an unwavering commitment to the role of increasing knowledge and progress imbibed with human and moral values.  Today the college offers Post Graduate courses for Masters in Commerce as well as Diploma in Banking and Finance.

"Knowledge Enlightens” is the motto of our college. We at Vidya Bhavan believe in wisdom must enhance the knowledge imparted so that it is put to enlightened use. We are certain that knowledge is power and that power entails responsibility- ours and that of our students. Our responsibility is to channelize the energy, the talent of our students and to mould their character and attitudes towards making them well adjusted, balanced, sensible and wise individuals, responsible and responding to the wider needs of family, society and country, capable of facing the challenges that are ahead of them.

In this scramble for admissions, our focus on students with a lower percentage has borne fruit, in that our persistent efforts to foster academic and extra-curricular interests and to shape the students’ character and attitude has led to better performance and even merit. This has resulted in a better opportunity for the students to find better employment opportunities and make a valuable contribution towards the society.

The college is very particular about the discipline and attendance of our students and enforces strict regulations to ensure that the students imbibe the right values and approach towards life. We conduct internal examinations and notify the results to parents. In addition, we also notify the parents about the student's attendance in the college. Parents of errant students are called to the college for informing them of their wards’ behaviour.

Academic excellence without social responsibility becomes meaningless and counterproductive. Social awareness is developed in students through the syllabus content as well as through workshops and outreach or exposure programmes conducted for the benefit of the students, thus inculcating in them a desire to serve the less privileged.

 We build inter-religious understanding, dialogue and awareness through prayer services, lectures, openness to all faiths and cultures.

Being small in size our speciality is the personalized approach we have towards our staff and students.

I thank you for your interest in this exceptional institution which has recorded nearly four decades of constant development, in the course of which it has accomplished much, making it one of the colleges recognized for its excellence and therefore, much sought after by the fresh applicants. It primarily intends to nurture the shelved potential in students providing an ideal platform for them to channelize their creative outbursts and lend expression to their thoughts and views on various aspects in serene manner.

Our Institution believes that the purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows, and as such are focused not only on pure studies but also on providing opportunity to each student to explore his or her own capabilities and their area of interest - curricular, co-curricular, or extra-curricular. We aim to develop soft skills that will equip them to manage and lead the varied opportunities and challenges of society with an added edge. We also cater to provide education at an affordable cost for strengthening students from the poor communities to be abreast with the current education system. The empowerment of women is essential for the creation of an equal and enriched society and education is indeed a powerful tool to achieve this objective. We, at our college, thus aim at developing self –reliant, conscientious women by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a strong identity for themselves, in the world which is reshaping itself at an unprecedented pace with the dominance of globalization and technology.

We believe that the complete development of a student into a holistic person requires the active participation of the parents too.
